Georgia Student Media Festival
The Reese Road Broadcast Team will submit two video projects to the Georgia Student Media Festival.
The first video was made in honor of Partner in Education Appreciation Week. It was made in collaboration with Mrs. Creech's 1st Grade Class and accompanied on ukulele by the media specialist, Mrs. Whalen.
The second video was made by the WRRLA Broadcast Team to promote Read Across America Week. Student reporters surprised teachers across the school to ask them the question, "What is your favorite children's book and why?"
Family Literacy Night 2018
Family Literacy Night was held on Wednesday, March 7, at Columbus Public Library! Hundreds of students and families attended and signed up for free library cards while visiting our beautiful public library! Thank you to our partners in education, Chattahoochee Valley Libraries, Little Caesars, and Barnes and Noble - Columbus.
Guys Read Program
The 2018 Guys Read Reading Program began on January 29, 2018, and ended on March 1, 2018. Ten fourth grade boys were selected to participate in this exciting reading club designed by guys, for guys. These students met twice a week in the media center during lunch time with beloved Guys Read volunteer, Mr. Johnnie. Mr. Johnnie introduced exciting new books and read them with the boys. At the end of the reading program, the "guys" voted for their favorite book and got to keep a free copy! The guys also received a free autographed book by famous author, Jon Scieszka! A graduation party was held at Columbus Public Library on Saturday, March 3, for the boys and their family members. This exciting program has been made possible by our educational community partner, Chattahoochee Valley Libraries. Thank you, CVL!

Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl 2018
On Saturday, January 27, 2018, fourth and fifth grade Students from Reese Road Leadership Academy had the opportunity to compete as a team in the 2018 Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Competition at Northside High School. Our school competed against teams from 28 other MCSD elementary schools. Students were quizzed on their knowledge of 20 books nominated for the 2017-2018 Georgia Children's Book Award.
Overall, our the Reese Road Team improved their overall score by over 122% from the year prior and received 10th place district-wide! Congratulations, Reading Bowl Team!

(STEAM)x Youth Exploratory & Career Expo
On Friday, November 11, fifth graders had the opportunity to attend the (STEAM)x Youth Exploratory & Career Expo at Columbus Convention Trade Center. This event was designed to expose K-12 students to the exciting careers available in Science. Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
"Columbus has a strong STEAM sector filled with a diversity of academic institutions, corporations, government agencies and start-ups where STEAM professionals work and STEAM undergraduate and graduate students study. STEM Day #2: Chattahoochee Valley Libraries
Friday, September 22 was the second STEM Day in the Reese Road Media Center! Classes had the opportunity to explore a variety of STEM Makerspace Stations provided by our community educational partner, Chattahoochee Valley Libraries. STEM Day #1: Barnes & Noble
Thursday, September 21 was the first STEM Day in the Reese Road Media Center! Classes had the opportunity to explore a variety of STEM Makerspace Stations provided by Barnes & Noble of Columbus. Thank you, Barnes & Noble! These exciting Makerspace supplies have been purchased for the media center program.
Book Fair 2017
Reese Road Leadership Academy held it's annual Crane Book Fair fundraiser in the Media Center from October 11-20 . Students had an opportunity to develop their leadership skills by setting up, volunteering, and tearing down the book fair. Over 70% of students participated in the Book Fair as a volunteer or customer. Overall, our school raised a total of $2,000 profit! Great job, Road Runners!
Author Visit: Yuyi Morales
Reese Road Leadership Academy honored to host Caldecott award-winning children's author, Yuyi Morales. On Friday, September 15, Yuyi Morales visited Reese Road in an assembly for all students in grades K-3 to introduce her books, artwork, and inspirations. The students loved meeting a famous author/illustrator, and felt inspired by her passion for books. Thank you for taking the time to meet and greet our students, Ms. Morales! This visit was sponsored by our community educational partner, Chattahoochee Valley Libraries. Thank you, CVL!
Yuyi Morales is the author and illustrator of many notable and award winning children’s books including “Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale” and “Viva Frida”which received a Pura Belpre Medal for illustration as well as the 2015 Caldecott Award. Her works portray and celebrate the Latino cultural experience.
